’90s Toybiz Marvel

So Mary Jane Watson, Pepper Potts, and Howard the Duck walk to a bar…

Start of a terrible, yet fitting joke when it comes to Howard the Duck. The original toy was picked up off of eBay, but badly in need of a new paint job. The main part was repainting his light canary yellow feathers to match the original comic look rather than the faded plastic. Beak, gloves, feet, and tie followed with only the jacket probably being the one thing not touched up with the brush.

The original Marvel Universe Mary Jane — the obscure and hard-to-find figure she has become over the years — had this terrible head when she came out many years ago which wasn’t fitting for the redheaded firecracker Peter Parker had managed to land. A quick new head was an easy thing, but then what to do with the original piece… which soon became the base for Pepper Potts with a new hair piece on permanent loan from Mystique. A quick belt from the fodder box and some fresh freckles on those cheeks gave Tony Stark a nice addition to his roller coaster life. The easiest thing was replacing the Spider-Man heart shirt with a new patriotic heart stolen from a nail sticker set.

Thunderstrike

If there is one thing I loved about ’90s Marvel, it was the wild things we discovered and re-discovered in each issue. After Eric Masterson stepped down as Thor (famously known as 'Bearded Thor' to most nowadays), Odin granted Eric his own hammer to continue defending those in need.

For this particular custom, several years ago some friends were going in on a unique three person competition where each person submitted something to be judged as a team. My entry was the former God of Thunder in his new look. The hammer (seen at his feet) was the original carved out item to represent the mighty Thunderstrike hammer. Accurate in size compared to the Marvel Universe Mjolnir at the time, but not that impressive otherwise. So I ordered a cast piece shortly afterwards to replace the rather puny object. Now owner and namesake are finally joined for the first time… as Hasbro announces an official Thunderstrike to come out in 2015. All leather pieces were given a light wash for a more worked leather look.

Last few hours of the Kickstarter are winding down and the All-In list has gotten even longer.

Vitruvian H.A.C.K.S. Series 1 Kickstarter: Greek Mythology

From Boss Fight Studio — a team of former Hasbro employees behind lines such as G.I. Joe, Star Wars, and Marvel Universe — comes a Kickstarter for a brand new line: Vitruvian H.A.C.K.S. Fresh off their sculpting work for Marauder John’s Marauder Task Force Gaming Figures Kickstarter, they now offer their own line of equal scale 1:18th figures in themed series.

Expansion sets have offered great additions like King Leonidas (for the 300 lovers), Amazon warriors (for the Xena & Wonder Woman lovers), and even blank bodies & accessory sets to add your own touch to the field.

The “All-in” package at $500 looks daunting at first, but this already includes:

  • Wave 2: Pre-Curse Medusa, Athenian warrior, Green Snake Gorgon, Underworld warrior, Medusa’s Sister Stheno
  • Wave 3: King Leonidas, Black Racer Gorgon, Myrmidon warrior, Medusa’s Sister Eurayle
  • Wave 4: Disciple of Eurayle, Milk Snake Gorgon, Ghost of the Battlefield 2-pack (Glow in the Dark Spartan vs Gorgon)

Even though TMNT Movie April O’Neil is about as useful at the cartoon version, she does come with a nice Sony camera for your world traveler or newspaper reporter.
